Power of The Tongue

The tongue is defined as an organ of the mouth. It is used in tasting, licking, swallowing and speaking. It is important to us and our ability to eat and essential in how we enjoy food. You would most likely be able to live without it but your quality of life would be changed dramatically.

The Bible mentions the tongue many times. It doesn't just mention the tongue and how it allows us to express ourselves through speech. It specifies how powerful the tongue is over and over again. The words we speak have the power to lift someone up, to encourage and motivate those around us. But we also have the power to tear someone down, to crush someone spirit or to anger and depress those around us.

A lot of times we are not careful with the words we speak. We often do not consider what the words mean? How another person may interpret what we say? How what we says affects how someone feels? Or how it may affect their behavior, their actions or their mood.

That is the power of the tongue. It can affect those around us without us ever lifting a finger. We all need to be more mindful because the people we affect most are the ones we love... our children, our spouses, our family members. We have the ability to touch everyone around us. Think about everyone that has heard you speak throughout a single day. Even if you are not speaking to them directly. Not to forget that the internet and telephone multiplies your reach even more.

Imagine the how it would make you feel if someone told you... 'You are amazing. You are blessed. You are so much stronger than you believe you are. Have a wonderful day.' A few nice words can set someone's mood up for the day. There is already too much negativity out in the world and we all have to deal with that everyday. Don't let your words cause someone to have a bad day.

Once you put words out into the atmosphere you cannot take them back. We should always stop think before we speak. Don't let our emotions get the best of us.. Be intentional with your speech. Don't let the enemy use your tongue for negativity.

The Bible says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue... (Proverbs 18:21).

The tongue is powerful and it is fully under your control... speak life.

Ephesians 4:29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Matthew 15:18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

James 3:3-6Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
