Only A Wicked Generation

Today I would like to talk about a Bible verse that I came across. A bible verse that disturbed me, made me a bit apprehensive and stirred my desire to pray. Not just for myself but for all of us. Every since I read it last, it has been weighing on my heart to share my thoughts with you.

Matthew 12:39 39He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Now if you did not know, these are the words of Jesus. Jesus never wasted any breath on unnecessary words, so it is advisable that we all pay particular attention to everything He says. There is a reason why a lot of bibles highlight His words in red ink. Not only for emphasis and clarity but also for the importance and significance of His words.

When I first read this verse, I was in full agreement with Christ but I had also distanced myself from the people that He was referring to. 'Yes Lord, only a wicked and adulterous generation would ask You for a sign. Who do they think they are?' I was thinking only of those people who were alive at the time and listening to Him speak. 'Woe to those sad and evil people. They have no idea who they are talking to.'

I read that verse in full ignorance and judgement, not realizing what Jesus was saying to me. It's funny how you can read a verse many times and then the next time you read it you are enlightened to a totally different understanding. Take heed, God will speak to you as you read the Bible. What He said to me was that 'we' are the wicked and adulterous generation.

We are the generation that He is speaking of. A generation of people looking to everything but God. A generation that needs a sign in order to believe. Many of us, even as Christians are living our lives so far away from God. And looking around, it appears that we do not even recognize the times that we are living in.

It is so saddening. We need a sign, that is the only way some of us will ever believe. But He has given us all the signs that we will ever need. It is all in His word and most of us are reluctant to read it. We are still receiving signs through our testimonies but many of us won't share it.

Those of us who see and know the signs must continue to share with those around us. Many will never believe, unless they see a sign, your life can be the sign that someone needs. Let your light shine amongst the darkness of this generation. You never know who you may be able to motivate towards Christ.

I encourage you to read all of Matthew Chapter 12, it's a long one but it's really good.
