The Bible is no ordinary book. It is a collection of books, letters and texts written under divine inspiration. These stories are Gods words to us. Through these texts God reveals who He is, who we are to Him and why we are all here. It explains things about prayer, our true nature as spiritual beings and tells the stories of many people from all different walks of life.
While reading the Bible, it can speak to you. It can speak to your life, your current situation and things of this world. Every aspect of life is addressed in some form throughout its pages. It can change how you see things. It can inspire you to be a better person and motivate great changes in your life.
People read the Bible for many different reasons. I know someone who read it just to prove his religion was right. I've heard others who read it just to disprove it as true. Others read it with their own preconceived ideas. With all the things they have been told about the Bible. Some go in with everything they have been taught or just with everything they think they already know about it.
I can tell you from my own experience that if you go to read the Bible with any predetermined ideas, you are going to miss out on so much. When I finally decided to read the bible for myself, I let go of everything I thought I knew and allowed the word to speak for itself. The results were life changing. I found that there were things in the Bible that I knew. Stories that I was familiar with and names that I had heard before. But even with those things, there was often more to the stories that I did not know about. And surprisingly, there were things that I was taught that did not line up with what I was reading in the Bible. The only way for you not to be deceived is to read His word for yourself.
I encourage you to read the Bible with a clean slate and see what things are revealed to you.
How will you know for sure if you are being taught properly if you don't know God's word? You trust that the people over you have a good understanding of what they are teaching but what if God reveals a different or a deeper understanding to you. There is only one way to know for sure.
Hebrews 4:12 12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
Romans 10:17 King James Version (KJV) 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Joshua 1:8 8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Psalm 119:11 11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
