Idolatry

Idolatry is defined as the extreme love, adoration or reverence of someone or something. The bible is very clear that, we should have no other gods before Him. It is actually one of the ten commandments. He created us for a purpose and He doesn't demand but He deserves for us to show Him reverence. He is worthy of all of our praise and worship.

When I think of idolatry I often think of bowing down and saying prayers to a statue. Like in the story of Moses. When Moses came down from the mountain with the first two stone tablets, he found the people singing and worshipping a golden calf. He was so upset that he broke the tablets that God had given him (Exodus 32). He knew that the people had created a great sin before God.

We have to be careful because it is not only statues, we can make things and people in our lives idols. We have to be mindful of the things that take priority in our lives. Do you have things that you 'have to' do everyday? Do you have a person in your life that is your everything? How much time do your hobbies consume? These things only become a problem when they take precedence in your life. Do you spend more time doing those things than seeking and spending time in the Lord?

If you live a life where your focus is not on God, think about what the most important things in your life are. Can you trust God to take care of those things for you? What brings you peace and security? Know that He can be that in your life too. Don't let anything or anyone take the place of God in your life.

We all have to live and work. And God wants us to enjoy life but we have to make time for Him. Make time by getting in His word and praying. I believe that He should be second to 'nothing' in our lives. So be mindful of the things in your life and don't let them become idols. We have a God that loves us unconditionally and when we put Him first, that's when the miracles begin. Don't take my word for it, try Him for yourself.
