I just learned an interesting fact about goldfish. Did you know that goldfish grow until they die? But at the same time they will never outgrow their tank. I've had several goldfish and I never knew that I could be stunting its development by keeping it in a small tank. Other than tank size it is also said that the quality of its water can impede its growth.
You learn something new everyday or at least I try to. Thinking about the goldfish, I couldn't help but make direct comparison to our minds. Just like the goldfish our minds can continue to grow until we die. The knowledge we receive during life is like the tank. Our minds cannot grow beyond the things we know. The person with a doctorate sees the would differently than the person with only a 8th grade education.
Also like the goldfish, the quality of our environment can impede our growth. Our environment feeds us certain information about the world. In many poorer communities the information we receive can be limited or skewed. And without proper education and knowledge a person in this environment may never see the world as it truly is... full of potential, experiences and opportunities.
The internet and television has now opened a window to the rest of the world. But I remember being a little girl and I knew that I could get a job when I grew up. But I never knew that I could be an author, the President or even an astronaut. I couldn't see myself doing anything outside of what the people around me were doing. Growing up my world was contained to the east side of Buffalo, NY.
Education, receiving knowledge and gaining wisdom is very important for our mental and spiritual growth. Our minds can grow until we die. That is so exiting to me. It's just up to us to feed it. We have control of our self- development, how far we expand our minds and how much progress we make in this life.
Many of us reach a certain level and just stop. Content with where we are. Learning just enough to get 'the job'. But God has given our minds the capability to grow. To grow beyond any limitation we think have been placed on us. You don't have to go to school, with the right tools you can teach yourself. I encourage you to read a book about something that interests you. Sign up for a class or two, learn a new skill or pick up a hobby. But what ever you do , don't stop learning.
Open your mind and grow, our only limitations are in our minds...
